After a long two-month lead time filled with teaser ads and vague hints, Victory officially revealed its latest model today, February 8th, at the Progressive International Motorcycle Show in Chicago, Il.
Called the Gunner, the early-release 2015 model year machine is a "bobber without compromise," according to Victory marketing copy. While we can't be entirely sure what that 'compromise ' refers to, it's likely the fact that the Gunner brings enough power to roll head-to-head with the big boys, yet still bring a stripped down attitude and be nimble enough for downtown sorties in the urban battle zone.
What we can confirm is that the Gunner soldiers on with the Victory tradition of combining design elements from existing models, contrasting them against trick new details, and setting it all against the the Freedom 106/6 power train slung from a tube frame.
The motorcycle press first saw the bike last December in a private showing at the Western Museum of Flight in Southern California. When the wraps came off, there was the full-size chassis (found on all Victory cruisers) with a steel frame rolling on lightweight 24-spoke cast aluminum wheels on either end. The air/oil-cooled 106 ci. (1731cc) v-twin engine remains unchanged, along with its claimed output of 110 ft-lbs of peak torque, so we'd guess there'll be no propulsion issues whatsoever on this new bike. Staged in front of military aircraft like the Northrop YF-17 Cobra and F-14 Tomcat, the Gunner looked right at home, with its dual staggered, blacked-out slash cut pipes, and a muscular, refined and finished attitude.
We'd say the Gunner's got more Judge and High-Ball influences than anything, with the same 64.8 inch wheelbase, round headlight and 16 inch wheels as on those bikes, though with substantially different handlebars and a unique tank. The Gunner's fat and beautifully spoked wheels are especially nice bits of custom coolness, shod with chunky 3.5 inch wide Dunlop 491 rubber with raised white lettering. Other riffs on the High-Ball include the Gunner's similarly chopped front and rear fenders, low solo seat, and blacked-out powertrain with contrasting polished fins, though the Gunner ups the ante with a premium Suede Titanium Metallic and Black paintjob lavishing the 4.5 gallon two-tone fuel tank, which also sports that signature raised spine you'll see on the Vegas 8-Ball. The low seat is a mere 25 inches off terra firma -- just like the High-Ball's -- making those two cruisers the lowest in Victory's current lineup.
But there's another feature on the Gunner that will probably further enhance its real-world appeal -- a low MSRP. At just $12,999, the price seems like a reasonable buy-in for a heavyweight cruiser - if you keep it stock. But if you opt to pack on all the cool new accessories Victory has also rolled out to support this bike -- things like billet covers, Stage 1 exhausts, red solo seats, luggage racks and V-bars (though we're told there's no ABS option) -- that pricetag is sure to swell appreciably.
At the end of the day, the Gunner doesn't bring a groundbreaking new design (nor did we expect one) but we're sure looking forward to riding one of these bad boys this March at Daytona Bike Week. The bike will available in dealerships in late March.
